On Friday, August 27th, I had the honor of attending my first Colombian fashion show. The first ever Colombia Luxury Show featured the best of the country’s fashion, beauty, health and tourism. As a prelude to New York Fashion Week right around the corner, this show was filled with fabulous people, art, and fashion.
The two day event kicked off at The Altman Building in New York City Friday night. As I walked around I found the most intriguing Colombian art work and high fashion on display from the second you walk in. Fabulous jewelry by Colombian designer, Mercedes Salazar, was a beautiful added touch on the displayed fashion. Work by Colombian photographers including Carlos Ruiz and Mauricio Velez. hung elegantly from the ceilings on display for the lucky invites.
Andrea Riaño, general manager of the Colombia Luxury Lifestyle Show gushed,
“We wanted New York to enjoy the real image of our country, Colombia – our land,
our culture, our people, and our products.” It was indeed a beautiful image that was left in my mind after the event. She went on to say, “The goal of the Colombia Luxury Lifestyle Show this year is to introduce New Yorkers to what Colombia has to offer, focusing on our fashion, beauty, health and tourism opportunities.”
A series of three fashion shows began at 8pm, starting off with Pitahaya Swimwear. Spring 2011 collection. Founded about five years ago, this was the first time designer Chechy Beneditti showcased her beautiful swimwear in New York. The sexy looks have already been featured in Marie Claire, Elle, as well as many other publications.
Before the next show we got a special live performance by Latin Grammy Nominated Colombian musician, Andres Cabas. Although I was not familiar with his work, the crowd absolutely adored him! Cabas performed a medley of songs while playing a gorgeous white piano.
Next up, Silvia Alfonzo‘s Spring 2011 collection owned the catwalk. According to her, the designs are made for the “feminine and sophisticated woman”. She began the line in 2007, and has several stores in Colombia. You can see her work disturbed across the world in boutiques and it was a special treat for all in attendance.
Last but not least on the runway was Edwing D’Angelo‘s collection preview. D’Angelo is a custom designer for celebrities such as Patti LaBelle, Winoma Judd, Vivica A. Fox, and more. He is well known for colorful Latin flare and has been featured in various movies, television networks, and magazines across the globe. The crowd was wooed by D’Angelo’s craftwork for both men and women. I loved how the collection was so versatile and unique with every look that passed.
Other Designers featured throughout the night included: Silvia Tcherassi, Amelia Toro, Isabel Henao, Francesca Miranda, Jean Pascal by Helena Quintana, Angel Yañez, Pepa Pombo, Adriana Santacruz and Hernan Zajar. Handcrafts were featured by: FRANCISCO EL HOMBRE, Hilda Gómez, CF Artesanos. Health and beauty was covered by Smile Designer Marlon Becerra, Plastic Surgeon Alan Gonzalez, Dentistry by Antonio Leon, and many more. Colombian tourism at the event was represented by the Departments (states) of Santander, Guajira, Tolima, and the Natural Parks and Reserves of Colombia.
Special thanks to ALIOMI and FrockOn.com for inviting me to such an amazing event! It was an incredible experience to see Colombia’s best right in my own city. Colombia is filled with rich culture and divine fashion; I need to book a flight ASAP!
