Haute Around the World: Memories of Miami Fashion Week 2011

Last Saturday, March 5th, I had the pleasure of attending the Miami Beach International Fashion Week Events, and boy was I in for a treat. The events started with the Culinary Style Café which was a showcase brought to us by Chef Alberto Bogado from chic restaurant BARU Urbano, located in the Downtown, Brickell area of Miami. Stella Artois, Barefoot Wine and Bubbly, Goya, Johnson & Wales University, and Joy Wallace Catering Production all came together to give us a taste of Chef Alberto’s culinary delights. Some of the treats included Pan Roasted Filet Mignon in Baru sauce with root Vegetable Hash, Tostones stuffed with cheese and Hogao sauce, and my personal favorite, the Milo Brownies. So next time you are in Miami, make sure to make a pit stop at BARU Urbano and satisfy those taste buds!

After my belly was satisfied I headed over to the fashion shows, which completely captivated me. I was able to attended two different shows, each had a mixture of designers from all over the world. The first event was the Pret-A-Porter Style Showcase featuring Eccentric Apparel-USA with special guest “models,” LUXXE Collections-USA, Boston Proper-USA, Mariela Allaix-Argentina, Marina Makaron Moscow-Russia and Bata Spasojevic. Spasojevic was just recently the winner of the MBIFW designer competition at Banja Luka Fashion Fair in Bosnia and Herzegovina. This was my favorite of the two events, which included Eccentric Apparel’s models, which happened to be dogs! These were some fashionable pups, wearing scarves, hoodies and coats of all sorts of fabrics and designs.

My second favorite designer was Marina Makaron, who used the paisley print to all avail. Her designs featured silk and chiffon scarves, full of abstract floral prints. This designer was very retro inspired, reminded me of the ever fabulous Emilio Pucci. I could definitely wear her designs to the beach or even with a maxi-dress.

The second showcase was the Copa Airlines Showcase featuring Claudia Bertolero-Peru, Federico Visuetti-Panama, Marcelo Quadros-Brazil, Eduardo Gonzalez-Colombia, and Giovanni Scutaro-Venezuela. This showcase was something out of this world. I completely fell in love with Giovanni Scutaro’s spectacular wedding dress, headpiece and all. He made me want to find a man and go get married in this exact dress. But for now I can just dream of wearing such a magical dress.

Haute Looks: Get Silky Skin with Johnson & Johnson

Johnson & Johnson’s latest line of products can keep anyones skin as smooth as a baby. Whether or not there are any babies in your life, you can always count on these products for deep moisturizing and the ultimate clean feeling. HAUTE NYC’s Angela & Magen share two of their favorite new Johnson & Johnson products to keep you looking haute.

We all know that haute moms are always busy and in a rush, but somehow should still find the time to look and feel fabulous. Johnson & Johnson products are perfect for Haute moms, or any woman on the go. Products like the Baby Oil Gel with Shea and Cocoa Butter are just what the beauty gods created for staying fresh and moisturized. Though generally created for use on babies these products serve a dual purpose. Not only will your baby’s skin be protected but so will yours. Only $3.29 for 6.5 oz, this body gel oil is perfect for maintaining moisture and adding a glow to your skin. For extra moisture I recommend using the gel after shaving and when your body is still wet, doing so locks in the moisture and leaves you feeling baby smooth for hours. Other great uses for this product are for massages, we all know how being a mom can be a tad-bit stressful but go ahead, treat yourself to a massage using the oil gel, you will sure feel fantastic. I am a big fan of body oils, I often prefer to use them over lotions as they tend to hold on to moisture longer and leave me feeling a bit on the sexy side. This product can be found in food, drug and general mass-market chain stores, so go on treat yourself, you know you deserve it.

The winter months can be harsh on any skin, young or old. Many body washes tend to gear toward a particular scent rather than the moisture of your skin. There are others that promise smooth and soft skin, but seem to end up leaving a greasy feel to the skin. The perfect balance between the two lays in the new Johnson & Johnson’s Baby Oil Body Wash with Shea & Cocoa Butter that instantly became my new favorite. Since the day I tried it, I have actually found a noticeable difference in the softness of my skin by using the body wash. Winter in New York this year has been one of the worst on record, and this has been the one product that allows me to battle the dreaded dry skin of winter. Since beginning my obsession with this at the beginning of the month, my skin is ready for summer and so am I! The aromatic scent of cocoa and shea butters are reminiscent of a warm summer day and is so refreshing on the skin. For only $3.99 in any drugstore, you can get a 15oz. bottle that is definitely worth the purchase.

Haute Looks: Boy Meets Girl USA Fall 2011 Presentation

This past Tuesday, I had the pleasure of attending the Fall 2011 Boy Meets Girl USA 2011 Presentation at the Metropolitan Pavilion for New York Fashion Week. Sponsored by Style 360 and Polaroid, the event was one of the most fun experiences of all fashion week. A mixed crowd of editors, bloggers, photographers, and celebrities included the likes of songstress Kat Deluna, the fabulous Jay Alexander, and even Danielle Staub of Real Housewives of New Jersey. The opening of the show consisted of a beautiful performance by Natasha Bedingfield that had every fashion maven in attendance clapping their hands along to the beat.

I was especially excited for the presentation after interviewing the designer, Stacy Igel on both HAUTE NYC and frockOn.com. I have compiled a few of my favorite looks from the show. For all of my thoughts on the event, check out my article on frockOn. xO

Haute Looks: TopShop

UK correspondent Jenni Fleet tells us about an English girl’s obsession, TopShop.

For us in England, TopShop is every girl’s ‘go to’ when they need to add a little something to their wardrobe.  Each day, I click my bookmarked tab to see what is new in and what I’ll be adding to my basket.

The reason it works so well is that it appeals to us all.  It’s the first port of call if you need a basic jersey tee, or a Saturday night dress, and now more than anything – a place to stock up on some fantastic colored nail varnishes.

With collaboration collections from the likes of Christopher Kane, Stella Vine and model Kate Moss, TopShop successfully made their name as the leading high street brand.  For every girl in England a visit to London meant only one thing; TopShop Oxford Street. Covering five floors which house a nail bar, a hair salon and a cafe, it is every girl’s dream come true. The summer of 2009 seen TopShop open its ‘Manhattan style’ concept store in my city, Liverpool.  It is the second largest store in the country and houses a Kurt Geiger concession, a Scin beauty bar and it’s very own personal shopping experience. Sometimes I find myself aimlessly wandering around, indulging in the latest trends whether that be Snake Valley, Graduation or Swedish Summer that are the current trends running in store.

My obsession took full hold when I started working there part time while studying for my degree.  Every three months, we would get uniform allowance, with a breathtaking 60% off.  It was like Christmas come early every time! But it seems as though TopShop fever is certainly catching.  Since its debut in New York on April 2nd 2009, celebrities and ‘It girls’ alike have jumped on the TopShop bandwagon. City girl, Olivia Palermo can often be spotted mixing TopShop pieces in with designer, alongside Rihanna and Jessica Alba – and you can’t really blame them!  While consistently being on trend, they cater for everyone.  Skinny jeans may not be your thing, but you’re sure to find something else.  I’m a sucker for TopShop dresses.  Pastel colours, pretty lace, over the top florals and anything with a peter pan collar! Sir Phillip Green deserves a pat on the back!

Haute Looks: Mulberry Hits America

Liverpool correspondent, Jenni Fleet gushes over the newest UK sensation to hit the states, Mulberry.

Mulberry is an iconic English heritage brand that we’ve well and truly fallen for here in England.  They’re not too ‘on trend’ classic handbags make the top of every fashion girl’s wish list and their pretty tea dresses are what we all dream of wearing while we float around our English manors drinking tea from china teacups.

Alexa Chung

The brains behind the brand, and the iconic Alexa handbag, also understand that Mulberry is the type of ‘go to’ for the girl that can only afford one major spending spree on a handbag.  While having the connotations of grandeur and English luxury, it also appeals to all, especially their handbag department. The infamous Alexa handbag, named after TV starlet Alexa Chung who rocked the fashion world in 2009, was sold out everywhere the minute it went on sale.  It’s classic, timeless satchel style shape made it practical yet oozed with glamour at the same time.  It became the type of bag that you could take anywhere which would give your outfit a little bit of oomph – especially when they came out in an array of colors.  For the third year running, the Alexa has made its debut, this time in a mouth watering watermelon color, perfect for the summer months that lay ahead.

Although the Alexa won’t be going anywhere anytime soon, it has found itself a little competition.  Welcome the Mulberry Tillie. The quintessentially British bag is somewhat similar to the Alexa, but has more of a glamorous, Upper East Side appeal, especially the light peach colored one, which fits perfectly with the announcement of Mulberry increasing their US presence.  Currently only operating from two small stores in NYC – one on Bleecker St & one on Madison Avenue. Mulberry has also announced the arrival of their new flagship store at 132 Spring Street.  I’m sure Mulberry fever will catch on stateside in no time, every fashionista needs a bit of British on her arm every now and again and seeing and Prince William is off the market – what else is there left to do?

Haute Looks: Golden Globes 2011

Get the low down on who looked haute and who did not at this year’s Golden Globe Awards with HAUTE NYC’s own Magen Martin.

Awards season 2011 started off with a bang. The Golden Globes were a heavenly fashion event. Here is a quick roundup of my favorite and least favorite ensembles of the night.

It seems emerald green was the haute color of the night but it really didn’t do much for me. The green dress on Mila Kunis in Vera Wang looked a little “old”, she could have used her sex appeal more and dressed a bit more on the sexy side. Hopefully at the next award show she will get it right. I do admit Catherine Zeta Jones looks fabulous in her Monique L’Huillier ball gown style dress, the detail of the fabric make her look like the princess of the red carpet.  The 80s, shoulder pads, sequins and all, inspired Angelina Jolie’s red carpet look. Though I wasn’t 100% convinced by her look it was not one of the worst of the night, Versace Altier did a mediocre job.

Now on to my favorite looks of the nights. Lea Michele from Glee looked absolutely flawless in her Oscar de la Renta salmon colored silk one-shoulder gown with ruffle detail, from the Spring/Summer 2011 collection. She donned Lorraine Schwartz jewels, a Judith Leiber clutch, and silver Christian Louboutin Pigalili shoes. She can do no wrong in this dress; Lea Michele is a red carpet goddess. Whoever her stylist is, definitely deserves a raise.

Red carpet veterans Halle Berry and Jennifer Lopez must have not looked in the mirror before leaving their house. Halle Berry tried a bit too much to be sexy in her black Nina Ricci dress. I would have much rather the dress not be short with the sheer layer on top, it would have looked better all the same length. Oh J.Lo, what were you thinking! Though her makeup and overall look was flawless, the dress was just wrong. White looks great on her tanned skin but the beaded poncho ruined the Zuhair Murad dress. I don’t know about you but I expect a lot more from these red carpet divas.

Overall the Golden Globes fashion was both entertaining and inspiring. Can’t wait to see what celebrity stylists have up their sleeves for the upcoming award shows!

Haute Looks: Bright Eyed Girls

The dreary darkness of winter will soon be behind us; and designers are keeping us all bright eyed for the warmth of spring. Bright, statement-making colors are so chic for Spring 2011. For the color conscious like myself, who always seem to wear black, working in such bold colors is easier when applied in a subtle way.

Sabath of Chictopia.com, takes this trend to the next level combining a lime green Dorothy Perkins coat with a royal blue H&M hat, and matching blue striped tee. She rocks this look so perfectly & certainly isn’t afraid to wear brights. Kudos on the outfit, gives me something to aspire to be able to pull off!

Coury Combs of fancytreehouse.com adds pops of bright red carrying an ASOS satchel to effortlessly put an urban spin on her dark sweater & jean combo. Her bright red vintage loafers are such a great go-to piece to brighten any monochromatic outfit.

A pair of colored pumps are a classic way to add color for both day and night.  The Calvin Klein “Collette” Pumps in Royal Blue are a favorite of mine. Bloomingdales.com has them for $139, and are definitely worth the buy. These flirty pumps can adding a touch of color to a dim office outfit and simultaneously work with jeans for an evening happy hour. So chic!

How will you incorporate brights into your wardrobe in the upcoming season?

Haute Looks: Glitter, Glitter Everywhere

Miami blogger Magen Martin shares one of her obsessions for the new year, glitter nail polish!

Don’t wait any longer! Hurry up and jump on the glitter bandwagon. The fabulous Katy Perry has joined forces with O P I to create a glittery nail polish collection that is sure to make a statement. Colors range from Teenage Dream (a pink glitter), Not Like the Movies (silver), Last Friday Night (a glittery blue), and The One That Got Away (a shade of berry). Last but not least the collection features a topcoat named Black Shatter that creates a cracked/semi-leopard pattern when applied over dried polish.  This collection hits stores this month, be on the look out as it is sure to sell out!

If you can’t wait for this collection to be available, check out the O P I Burlesque Collection inspired by the movie, which is currently on the market. This collection features 12 polishes, now that is a lot of glitter to choose from. Let’s see how some real life haute girls look in the polishes.

I personally love glitter nail polishes because the manicure tends to last a little longer than normal polishes do, and heck who doesn’t love glitter in such a subtle way. Yet another haute accessory tool, who knew glitter nail polish could be such a trend. Can’t wait to get my hands on the new Katy Perry collection !
