Haute Around the World: Memories of Miami Fashion Week 2011

Last Saturday, March 5th, I had the pleasure of attending the Miami Beach International Fashion Week Events, and boy was I in for a treat. The events started with the Culinary Style Café which was a showcase brought to us by Chef Alberto Bogado from chic restaurant BARU Urbano, located in the Downtown, Brickell area of Miami. Stella Artois, Barefoot Wine and Bubbly, Goya, Johnson & Wales University, and Joy Wallace Catering Production all came together to give us a taste of Chef Alberto’s culinary delights. Some of the treats included Pan Roasted Filet Mignon in Baru sauce with root Vegetable Hash, Tostones stuffed with cheese and Hogao sauce, and my personal favorite, the Milo Brownies. So next time you are in Miami, make sure to make a pit stop at BARU Urbano and satisfy those taste buds!

After my belly was satisfied I headed over to the fashion shows, which completely captivated me. I was able to attended two different shows, each had a mixture of designers from all over the world. The first event was the Pret-A-Porter Style Showcase featuring Eccentric Apparel-USA with special guest “models,” LUXXE Collections-USA, Boston Proper-USA, Mariela Allaix-Argentina, Marina Makaron Moscow-Russia and Bata Spasojevic. Spasojevic was just recently the winner of the MBIFW designer competition at Banja Luka Fashion Fair in Bosnia and Herzegovina. This was my favorite of the two events, which included Eccentric Apparel’s models, which happened to be dogs! These were some fashionable pups, wearing scarves, hoodies and coats of all sorts of fabrics and designs.

My second favorite designer was Marina Makaron, who used the paisley print to all avail. Her designs featured silk and chiffon scarves, full of abstract floral prints. This designer was very retro inspired, reminded me of the ever fabulous Emilio Pucci. I could definitely wear her designs to the beach or even with a maxi-dress.

The second showcase was the Copa Airlines Showcase featuring Claudia Bertolero-Peru, Federico Visuetti-Panama, Marcelo Quadros-Brazil, Eduardo Gonzalez-Colombia, and Giovanni Scutaro-Venezuela. This showcase was something out of this world. I completely fell in love with Giovanni Scutaro’s spectacular wedding dress, headpiece and all. He made me want to find a man and go get married in this exact dress. But for now I can just dream of wearing such a magical dress.

Haute Looks: Get Silky Skin with Johnson & Johnson

Johnson & Johnson’s latest line of products can keep anyones skin as smooth as a baby. Whether or not there are any babies in your life, you can always count on these products for deep moisturizing and the ultimate clean feeling. HAUTE NYC’s Angela & Magen share two of their favorite new Johnson & Johnson products to keep you looking haute.

We all know that haute moms are always busy and in a rush, but somehow should still find the time to look and feel fabulous. Johnson & Johnson products are perfect for Haute moms, or any woman on the go. Products like the Baby Oil Gel with Shea and Cocoa Butter are just what the beauty gods created for staying fresh and moisturized. Though generally created for use on babies these products serve a dual purpose. Not only will your baby’s skin be protected but so will yours. Only $3.29 for 6.5 oz, this body gel oil is perfect for maintaining moisture and adding a glow to your skin. For extra moisture I recommend using the gel after shaving and when your body is still wet, doing so locks in the moisture and leaves you feeling baby smooth for hours. Other great uses for this product are for massages, we all know how being a mom can be a tad-bit stressful but go ahead, treat yourself to a massage using the oil gel, you will sure feel fantastic. I am a big fan of body oils, I often prefer to use them over lotions as they tend to hold on to moisture longer and leave me feeling a bit on the sexy side. This product can be found in food, drug and general mass-market chain stores, so go on treat yourself, you know you deserve it.

The winter months can be harsh on any skin, young or old. Many body washes tend to gear toward a particular scent rather than the moisture of your skin. There are others that promise smooth and soft skin, but seem to end up leaving a greasy feel to the skin. The perfect balance between the two lays in the new Johnson & Johnson’s Baby Oil Body Wash with Shea & Cocoa Butter that instantly became my new favorite. Since the day I tried it, I have actually found a noticeable difference in the softness of my skin by using the body wash. Winter in New York this year has been one of the worst on record, and this has been the one product that allows me to battle the dreaded dry skin of winter. Since beginning my obsession with this at the beginning of the month, my skin is ready for summer and so am I! The aromatic scent of cocoa and shea butters are reminiscent of a warm summer day and is so refreshing on the skin. For only $3.99 in any drugstore, you can get a 15oz. bottle that is definitely worth the purchase.

Haute Looks: Golden Globes 2011

Get the low down on who looked haute and who did not at this year’s Golden Globe Awards with HAUTE NYC’s own Magen Martin.

Awards season 2011 started off with a bang. The Golden Globes were a heavenly fashion event. Here is a quick roundup of my favorite and least favorite ensembles of the night.

It seems emerald green was the haute color of the night but it really didn’t do much for me. The green dress on Mila Kunis in Vera Wang looked a little “old”, she could have used her sex appeal more and dressed a bit more on the sexy side. Hopefully at the next award show she will get it right. I do admit Catherine Zeta Jones looks fabulous in her Monique L’Huillier ball gown style dress, the detail of the fabric make her look like the princess of the red carpet.  The 80s, shoulder pads, sequins and all, inspired Angelina Jolie’s red carpet look. Though I wasn’t 100% convinced by her look it was not one of the worst of the night, Versace Altier did a mediocre job.

Now on to my favorite looks of the nights. Lea Michele from Glee looked absolutely flawless in her Oscar de la Renta salmon colored silk one-shoulder gown with ruffle detail, from the Spring/Summer 2011 collection. She donned Lorraine Schwartz jewels, a Judith Leiber clutch, and silver Christian Louboutin Pigalili shoes. She can do no wrong in this dress; Lea Michele is a red carpet goddess. Whoever her stylist is, definitely deserves a raise.

Red carpet veterans Halle Berry and Jennifer Lopez must have not looked in the mirror before leaving their house. Halle Berry tried a bit too much to be sexy in her black Nina Ricci dress. I would have much rather the dress not be short with the sheer layer on top, it would have looked better all the same length. Oh J.Lo, what were you thinking! Though her makeup and overall look was flawless, the dress was just wrong. White looks great on her tanned skin but the beaded poncho ruined the Zuhair Murad dress. I don’t know about you but I expect a lot more from these red carpet divas.

Overall the Golden Globes fashion was both entertaining and inspiring. Can’t wait to see what celebrity stylists have up their sleeves for the upcoming award shows!

On the Street: Haute Eats on a Budget

Magen Martin knows New Yorkers, well everyone, need to hold onto any extra penny they can these days. Check out her tips to eating haute on a budget.

Listen up fashionistas. Now you can still go out on the town and not be concerned about pinching pennies. Companies such as Groupon and BlackboardEats, offer daily discount deals for various services that allow you to have fun while saving money at the same time.

BlackboardEats markets themselves as having “unreal deals at the best restaurants.” This website offers free deals that are e-mailed on a daily basis with a pass code to different restaurants depending on the city you select. They currently service the NYC area, LA, SF and also have an everywhere section which focuses on online food stores. Some recent NYC deals featured the following restaurants: Cipriani Wall Street, Ardesia, Bacaro, La Lucha, and Da Silvano. The daily deals often include a certain percentage off dinner or lunch or a complimentary appetizer with the purchase of an entrée. Some deals have even included a free bottle of wine.  The deals expire a few weeks from the purchase date, so you’ll have to be sure not to miss out. A service like this is great for anyone who is on a budget but still wants to hit the town.

Groupon on the other hand, offers a variety of deals and services. I’ve personally used this site a handful of times for various savings such as discounts on nail salon services, restaurants, and vehicle repair services and even discounted gift cards for clothing stores such as American Apparel. Like BlackboardEats, you sign up for the daily deal, if you are interested in the deal you go ahead and purchase it, the deal is then e-mailed to you, you print out the coupon and provide it to the vendor at time of use.

Raquel, an avid Groupon user, had great reviews on their services; “I wish I knew about Groupon sooner! They have great deals personalized to my taste and interests ranging from dining to fitness, it’s easy to use, and the prices are unbeatable, There’s so many things to do or new things i want to try, but it’s hard to come across an affordable way to experience it, Groupon is a great way to do just that!”

Groupon also caters to the major US cities. Hopefully BlackboardEats spreads its wings and reaches out to other US cities soon. I sure could use some discounts at some local trendy Miami restaurants. In the meanwhile, I’ll use Blackboardeats on my many travels to NYC, such a good way to save money while on vacation or business trips.

HAUTE NYC Welcomes Magen Martin

HAUTE NYC officially welcomes Miami blogger Magen Martin to join the writing team! Magen has recently written Topsy Turban & Glitter Glitter Everywhere for HAUTE NYC & we just adore her! Magen adds some Miami heat to our site & tells us a little bit about herself.

First and foremost, I am a New Yorker trapped in a Miamian’s body. Friends and family have described me as the petite version of Anne Hathaway meets Charlotte from Sex and The City. I am a fashionista and pop culture enthusiast. I like to appreciate good fashion; girl’s got a knack for knowing her fashion and culture! I try to always look put together and in style without trying hard.

I am addicted to all things black, sparkly and classy. I don’t limit myself to one designer or store, always willing to try something new. I am all about accessorizing, using one key item to complete and make the outfit, whether it is a headpiece or the color of your nail polish.  Fashion, art, books, music and everything else in between make up whom I am. I am really into concerts, blogs, traveling, coffee and my yorkie, Napoleon.

Recently unemployed, I am now 100% focused on my blogging and social media career which brought me to HAUTE NYC. I am looking forward to working with all the contributors of the site and to help take HAUTE NYC to a new level, by exposing it beyond NYC. Fashion and blogging are two things that I wake up and go to sleep with on my mind. I am attached to my computer and blackberry, ready to report the latest happenings!

I look forward to contributing my fashion perspective with you all. Happy Reading !!!

“Just be yourself. Never change who you are to make someone else happy. Be yourself and the right person will love you for you – beauty and imperfections.”

Haute Looks: Glitter, Glitter Everywhere

Miami blogger Magen Martin shares one of her obsessions for the new year, glitter nail polish!

Don’t wait any longer! Hurry up and jump on the glitter bandwagon. The fabulous Katy Perry has joined forces with O P I to create a glittery nail polish collection that is sure to make a statement. Colors range from Teenage Dream (a pink glitter), Not Like the Movies (silver), Last Friday Night (a glittery blue), and The One That Got Away (a shade of berry). Last but not least the collection features a topcoat named Black Shatter that creates a cracked/semi-leopard pattern when applied over dried polish.  This collection hits stores this month, be on the look out as it is sure to sell out!

If you can’t wait for this collection to be available, check out the O P I Burlesque Collection inspired by the movie, which is currently on the market. This collection features 12 polishes, now that is a lot of glitter to choose from. Let’s see how some real life haute girls look in the polishes.

I personally love glitter nail polishes because the manicure tends to last a little longer than normal polishes do, and heck who doesn’t love glitter in such a subtle way. Yet another haute accessory tool, who knew glitter nail polish could be such a trend. Can’t wait to get my hands on the new Katy Perry collection !

Haute Looks: Topsy Turban

Guest blogger Magen Martin gives HAUTE NYC a slice of Miami flavor! She gushes to us about her new favorite trend! Let us know if you think this is a haute look!

Have you ever been hesitant about trying a certain trend? Well, have no fear the turban is here. A local Miami designer named David Acosta first exposed me to the turban trend; he is the head designer of GoldSaturn; a cute and trendy t-shirt, tank, dresses and accessory company based out of Miami. His turbans are the headband style, for those of you who want to play it a bit safe but still be trendy.

Magen in the pitch black turban with her friends!

I own the “pitch black” basic turban, I chose that one so it would be more versatile. I am big fan of black and classic look.

Kourtney Kardashian was recently spotted wearing the Pitch Black- Studded turban. How amazing is that for this local Miami designer to have a celeb wearing his item?

Check out my friend Jacky and her “fun” turban, this one is black with red hearts on it, perfect for the upcoming Valentine Day holiday.

Another great online store for turbans is Something4you on Etsy.com. This designer is also based out of Miami but delivers all over the country. Her style is a bit different from GoldSaturn, she focuses more on the whole-head type turban and her prices range from $4.50 and up, can you believe that? I purchased yet another black turban but this time it was for a Christmas gift. I will definitely be buying more of her turbans.
