A Haute Minute: Jewelry Designer Carola Bun

Canadian jewelry designer Carola Bun has designed jewelry for the most fashionable individuals including Lady Gaga, Brandy, and Lady Starlight. I was able to chat with the jewelry maven for a full frockOn 5 feature on frockOn.com. Angela Samartano gets the scoop from Miss BUN herself.

 

 

HAUTE NYC: How did you begin your business in jewelry and parfum creation?

Carola: Jewelry: For several years, I’ve made couture dresses. In August of last year, I became inspired by the designs of India and began adding hundreds, if not thousands of beads to the dresses I was creating. My beadwork progressed and moved me to work with pearls. Coco Chanel has always inspired me and the idea of a single strand of pearls married with a pair of stylized embroidery scissors came to mind; Chanel wore something very similar as she worked, therefore the necklace I created in her honor is aptly named “Coco”. Within a few weeks later, the Tutu Collection was born! Parfum: I’ve always loved fragrance, particularly scents with floral, feminine notes. Often, when I’m in the process of visioning a design or an idea, I’ll associate a scent with it. Creating a signature BUN fragrance was by far the biggest challenge to date. I made the assumption that by simply combining all my favorite essential oils, I would have the ultimate Parfum. Not the case. Many hours that turned into days and weeks were spent researching, combining, sampling and testing before Lady Godiva, a true, perfect Parfum was complete. Eau de Toilettes have become commonplace and true parfums costly and symbolic of days gone by. I want to bring that back. Place just a drop of “Lady Godiva Parfum” wherever you wish to be kissed!

 

 

HAUTE NYC: At the young age of 23 years old, you have already accomplished so much. What has been the best experience of your career thus far?

Carola: I attribute much of my success to the great people that have come into my life. Within one year of designing and making jewelry, I’ve had the opportunity to design for Lady Gaga, Lady Starlight, Lisa Mazzucco, Brandy, The Grammys and the Oscars! For my generation, there is much wonderment and excitement surrounding Starlets of today. Being a part of that is my greatest accomplishment so far.

HAUTE NYC: What is your favorite part about being a designer? What can we expect from the BUN brand in the upcoming months?

Carola: Bringing an idea from concept to creation, making something so special and unique that has never existed before, a physical object that you can touch and feel, then seeing others experience sheer joy from something I have created is magic.In the coming months, there are many exciting things ahead for BUN: two new collections “La Petite Fleur” and “Le Phantome”, BUN Events, and a BUN world tour.
